Interesting example going on right now that calls out the increasing speed of the news world, and indirectly points to the changing nature of journalism, and the impact that blogs and other online sites are having on traditional press. In case you’ve missed it, Mel Gibson was arrested for dui, and as part of that made some rather inflammatory statements. TMZ (online entertainment site) picked it up (July 28), got up on drudge report, then….silence in the mainstream media. There was DUI news, but nothing else – but the pressure for the blogs over the weekend kept the story alive and it made the leap to broadcast and print in all its full glory on Monday. TMZ built a brand (you couldn’t turn on the TV yesterday w/o seeing their site) and the ongoing shift in the way news is created and distributed continues.
