Nothing to start off a Sunday at CES like a good snark from Nick Carr. And while I think he might be a bit overly harsh, I share some of his concerns. In my new hometown, the Seattle Times has been running a series of stories looking at the way courts in Washington have wrongly closed cases for review. It's great stuff, a huge benefit to the public, exactly the kind of watchdog role we hope to get from the mainstream media. There was nothing instant about it. Research, legal fees, constant pressure, yes, instant, no. This is a valuable role now being filled, and one I worry deeply about, based on the current economics of journalism.
