The current issue of Fortune has a great story by Jeffrey O'Brien looking at how Wii is winning in the console wars. It's long, but a must read -- Fortune has been on a roll of late (minus the awful "manage us" cover from a bit ago - truly awful stuff there). Anyway, the Wii story is classic Fortune -- in depth, lots of exec access, good art, focus on the business and on the competition, solid numbers presented in an interesting way. Here is a great quote from Satoru Iwata that sums up his view of how Nintendo looks at the world: "We are not competing against Sony or Microsoft. We are battling the indifference of people who have no interest in videogames."
Lots of companies make similar statements, but for right now, Nintendo appears to be doing a pretty good job of living up to this premise.
The article is worth reading for two reasons. First, as a PR professional, it's good to see/identify a publications "voice" -- which clearly comes through here. Second, this is a great story about business strategy and competition, using the video game industry, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo as the main players.
