First panel of the day is about platforms. I'm listening to Marc Benioff of Salesforce.com riff on what makes a platform. Google, Second Life, Facebook are also on the panel. Attendees are:
Marc Benioff, CEO, salesforce.com
Marissa Mayer, Vice President, Search Products and User Experience, Google
Philip Rosedale, CEO, Linden Lab
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook
Pretty interesting conversations. Couple of things I think are interesting:
1. How exactly is salesforce.com a platform? Someone smarter than me will have to answer that question.
2. Marissa Meyer just talked about the need to "cache information locally" but it sounds like she's really talking about a software application. I guess its not cool to build a software app, but it is cool to "cache software locally."
3. Mark Z has by far the most cogent explanation of the value of a platform, both to companies and to individuals.
More later.
