Lessons of the Digital Media Revolution

Super interesting panel going on at iMeme. Participants:

Lauren Berkowitz, Senior Vice President, Digital
EMI Music North America
Robert Glaser, CEO, RealNetworks
Jerry Harrison, Talking Head and Chairman, iLike
Terry McBride, CEO, Nettwerk Music Group
Shane Robison, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer, Hewlett-Packard

Early contender for quote of the day, courtesy of Terry McBride, talking about why the music industry has struggled so much in the new world: "You can't legislate or mandate behavior." Okay, I take his point, but c'mon -- you can't legislate or mandate behavior? That's why people no longer smoke in pubs in Ireland, eh?

Some good commentary, but the challenge here is that without having representation from either a) someone from Apple talking about the value of what they are doing; or b) someone from a studio (movie or music) to talk about the the value of IP.

DRM free is great, but as Rob noted, only about 10 percent of digital music is now DRM free...

UPDATE:

Jerry just made a great point about the relationship of the record company to artists -- he said they are going to become more like venture capitalists in the way the look for, support and in the end make money from artists.
