The Rise and Fall of Blogging, Twitter and Facebook

Catching up on some of my reading after a few days of running around a bit, and belatedly saw this post from Jeremy over at the loose wire blog. In it, he perfectly captures a number of themes that are echoing around, and which in many ways were reinforced at the iMeme conference. Jeremy starts and ends by asking the question, should you blog? and along the way touches on social networks, community and the value of good writing. He closes by saying:

Blogging in short, never dies: It's just the start of a road that goes we know not where. So if you're thinking of blogging, ask yourself why you want to do it, and whether you might not be better off twittering, powncing, jaikuing or facebooking. Or waiting until the next Big Thing. It shouldn't be long.

Much of the conversation at iMeme ended up touching on similar topics -- innovation, speed of change in the industry, the role of social networks and how technology impacts societal behavior. What struck me is how often I heard the same thing from people on panels: just what business am I in? Am I a media company? A pipes company? A software company? An entertainment company? All of the above?

What is true is how blurred the lines are. There is no distinction between technology and society, they are two sides of the same coin. Ditto for entertainment and social networking, or content and distribution. We are living our lives in one big enormous mashup of a world, and it is fun, fun, fun.
