I'm a data hound. Today, I discovered that there is such a thing as wanting too much data. At the end of the day, I went for a run, equipped as usual with my heart rate monitor, accelerometer, watch, iRiver. I've been using these enough so that I've stopped running into things while checking all the data, though I will say I've not yet mastered figuring out what song is playing without slowing down.
ANYWAY, I was running down a hill and noticed that my heart rate was nice and low, for which I spent a few minutes congratulating myself on what good shape I was in, until I noticed that unless I had a heart rate like a metronome, something wasn't right.
I stopped. I pushed buttons, I reset. I ran some more. Repeat. No luck. Frustrated, I ran harder, trying to see if I could get the thing to register my now pounding heart. No.
Stop. Reset. Repeat.
I'm not really training for anything, so eventually I decided that assuming I wasn't having some sort of reverse heart problem, I should just finish the run, which I did, except that I'd spent so long dinking around with the equipment that I got caught in an incredible hailstorm, which sort of hurt.
My lesson? There is nice to have data, and important data. Today, I spent a bit of time trying to get nice to have data, and as a result got cold and wet. I bet with a little bit of thought, I'll be able to apply this to my day job. ;)
