Publicity Bad Karma

Can't help but notice that two pretty high profile stories that more or less celebrated/created heroes out of their subjects have had a sort of EA Sports Curse/Sports Illustrated Curse impact in pretty short order.

To whit:

First, the New York Times Play magazine did a great piece by Michael Lewis looking at the art and science of place kicking, through the lens of the kicker Adam Vinatieri, billed as a great clutch kicker. Anyone watching football last Sunday watched Vinatieri whiff on two kicks that would've won the game.

Second, while the headline was pretty tough (who wants to be called an extortionist?), the New Yorker profile on Scott Boras was pretty positive, and in retrospect to the kind of vitriol and scorn being heaped on him after the latest NY Yankee/Alex Rodriguez news of the last few days.

In both cases, the lesson is that there are professions who should *not* be front and center in front of the media, to which I would say agents, place kickers and PR people (paging Ronn Torossian) should lead the list.
