"A Person Who Posts Under The Name"

In an otherwise pretty interesting story by Virginia Heffernan about Flickr and its impact on art photography, I came across this jarring quote:

A photography blogger who posts under the name Thomas Hawk is a Flickr regular, and he told me in an e-mail conversation that there is not a single Flickr style.

What do I make of this? Is Thomas Hawk not really his name?  Then,

In the meantime, another popular Flickr photographer who goes by the name Merkley was building up his own opus.

"goes by the name?" Again, what do I think of this? Heck, I thought I was reading the NYT, who I am sure could come up with the real name of Thomas Hawk, who quite clearly has a number of other names, and ditto for Merkley, who does not even have a second name, apparently.

Is it just me, or is this a weird convention?

Thomas's Blogger profile makes it pretty clear this is a pen name, and he also goes to some lengths to make sure his real name is not linked with that pen name.

See also his profile at Zooomr, where he is CEO and Chief Evangelist but continues to use the pen name without leaving any hint that it is not his "real" name:

Given the mainstream media's sensitivity to allegations of using faked sources (cf Glass, Blair), I can't say I blame them for the awkward construction here. But I agree it's a little jarring.
